A proposed law in New Jersey could ban police officers from wearing masks or any type of face coverings while dealing with the public.

🧑‍⚖️ What the Proposed Law Would Do

  • The current proposal (Senate Bill 3112 and similar companion bills in the Assembly) would bar police and other law enforcement officers from wearing a mask or disguise while interacting with the public in the performance of their official duties.

  • Exceptions are included for situations such as:

    • Undercover operations or tactical assignments where concealment is necessary.

    • Wearing a protective shield that doesn’t obscure the face.

    • Medical-grade masks or respirators for health reasons.

    • Masks needed for environmental protection (e.g., cold weather, smoke, biological hazards).

📌 Identification Requirements

The bill would also require officers to present clear identification (such as badge, ID card, agency name and number, or uniform insignia) before detaining or arresting a person, with certain exceptions for officer safety or ongoing investigations.

📈 Status of the Legislation

  • Bills like S-3112 are currently introduced and being considered in committee — they have not become law yet.

🗣️ Why Lawmakers Are Pushing It

Sponsors argue the measure would:

  • Increase transparency and trust in law enforcement.

  • Reduce fear or confusion in communities when officers interact with the public.
